Moods and Emotions

Moods and Emotions – What’s the Real Difference?

September 28, 2021

The one thing we know for certain is that with moods and emotions they go up, and they go down. Humans are trying to emerge intact from a global pandemic, which greatly affected (and still does) how we feel daily. Mental illness is a very real thing and under its dark surface we encounter mood disorders. The most common are depression, bipolar disorder, self-harm, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Let’s start by understanding the difference between mood disorders and emotions. Emotions are short-lived and are generally related to the situations we face or interactions we encounter. Mood, on the other hand, is a general feeling we experience over an extended period. Unlike emotion, it can last for hours, days, or even weeks. Our moods have a huge effect on relationships, energy levels, sleep, our immune system, and daily routine.

It’s crucial to get to the root of mood issues that arise, and our lifestyle plays a big role. But how can we turn our frowns upside down? There are many ways, but we believe the key is to start from the inside out, by giving our bodies the right tools, such as suitable supplements, to help us see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Mood Enhancing Supplements?

Here are some supplements that can be added to your daily routine to help maintain a happy disposition:

Omega-3

There are two types of Omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and modulate neurotransmitters. These are EPA and DHA, they can be found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines.

B Vitamins

B Vitamins play a huge role in the production of mood-boosting brain chemicals. B12 and folate help us to maintain an overall positive mood.

Vitamin D

This hormone, known as “the sunshine vitamin”, activates the genes necessary to release neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine – the happy hormones. It is therefore crucial for our bodies to get enough Vitamin D.

SAMe (S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine)

S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe) can support inflammatory response as well as hormonal balance. It is a naturally occurring chemical in the body and we primarily get it from animal proteins like lamb, beef, salmon, and turkey.

GABA

Gamma-aminobutyric acid is an amino acid and is one of your brain’s main neurotransmitters. It helps to increase alpha-waves and decrease beta-waves, which help create a sense of physical relaxation.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral that half of Americans don’t have enough of. It’s been shown to support a balanced stress response and can also help increase levels of GABA in your brain helping you to sleep more soundly and maintain mood balance.
