The Magic of Mushrooms

The Magic in Mushrooms: Mother Natures’ Supplements.

Aug. 23, 2021

The functional mushroom market was valued at over $25 billion in 2020 – urged partly by the pandemic and the global push in wellness, but also by celebrity endorsements and bold claims.

Claims such as fighting cancer, improving cognitive ability, and improving immune systems.

But are they living up to all the hype? And what does the vast world of naturally growing fungi have in ‘spore’ for us humans?

Do mushroom supplements work?

The most important thing to remember when it comes to mushrooms as a health and wellness supplement is that there are a multitude of varieties and information may be generalised, so take the time to research each specific type of mushroom supplement available.

For example, mushrooms such as Chaga work well for your immune system. Lions Mane helps with cognitive health, and Reishi promotes sleep and reduces stress. So, it’s key to have a good idea of what you want from these natural gifts from Mother Nature, before deciding on a customized supplement solution.

The efficacy of mushroom supplements is still being debated, but initial research has been extremely promising. Mushrooms have featured in eastern medicines for centuries and have a strong history. As interest grows in bespoke nutrition, so too does research into it. There is little doubt that mushrooms contain chemicals that are beneficial, that we do know. Reishi, Lions Mane, and Turkey Tail all naturally produce chemicals beneficial in the treatment of cancer, but the main area of current research is whether or not supplements provide the same benefits.

Types of mushroom supplements

Here are the top five most common mushroom supplements:

Reishi

Contains the compound Triterpene which has remarkable benefits in alleviating anxiety, easing depression, and encouraging better sleep. Reishi mushrooms also promote healing and sharpen mind focus too.

Lion’s Mane

This is packed with antioxidants but is rare in the fact that it helps with the production of the bioprotein nerve growth factor (NFG) and Myelin (an insulation around nerve fibres), which is crucial to brain health. This fantastic fungi strain is key when it comes to cognition, memory and concentration.

Chaga

These guys are full of antioxidants and have been found to reduce low-density lipoprotein or ‘bad cholesterol’ and their key strengths lie in:

  • Anti-aging
  • Fighting inflammation
  • Lowering LDL (low density lipoprotein)

Shitake

Easily one of the more common mushrooms being used in households today. They promote a healthy heart, lower LDL, and have chemicals that reduce the absorption and production of cholesterol in the liver. Plus, they make a super tasty addition to a meal!

Turkey tail

Containing a compound called Polysaccharide-K (PSK), they stimulate the immune system and are an approved anti-cancer prescription drug in Japan.

Mushrooms: The Take-away

Considering the information above, we may have piqued your interest. Mushroom supplements have massive advocates around the world including the likes of GQ and GOOP. As with any supplements or bespoke nutrition, it is important to do your due diligence, always talk to your doctor beforehand, especially if you are on chronic medication or have other conditions.
